Monday Millennials – Articles You Should Read for 2/16/2009

Expand Your Brains!

IdeasI’ve decided to try out a new idea, called Monday Millennials.  Every Monday, I’m going to write a post focusing on the best news articles on Millennials (those born between 1980 and 2000) I’ve come across.  Some of them will be upsetting, some of them will be uplifting.  All of them will be enlightening.  If I found the comments or anything in particular fascinating, I’ll point that out.

  1. Friedman’s Epiphany – Shedding the ‘Quiet’ Label – http://www.futuremajority.com/node/5179 – this is an article about Thomas Friedman (a social economist) who complains that Millennials are the quietest generation with the smallest amount of social activist angst he’s ever seen or studied.  I don’t think he’s all that wrong, but that he just doesn’t realize our communication style and angst is spread via the social networks.  It’s a good read, and the external links to Friedman’s articles are great fun.
  2. Communicating with a new generation – http://www.hopehealth.com/blog2/?p=99 – this article has a “health benefits” focus.  It’s not so important what they’re saying about health benefits as what they’re saying about us.  In particular, pay attention to the source material that they use to draw their conclusions and the wording they use to describe us.  “Impatient”, “multitasking as an offshoot of impatience”… the implied message is that “you need to learn how to tolerate these young jackasses so they buy into your bullshit health plans”.
  3. Clash of the Generations – http://tinyurl.com/c6e6eo – this article is spot-on about the majority of technical careers.  A lot of baby boomers are coming out of retirement as their savings funds dry up, directly competing with millennials for a number of jobs.  The only solution is to start up businesses and create jobs, bringing the wealth back down to the middle class by exchanging services.
