<p>For something causing the big-wigs in Washington so much trouble, you would think the millennials would have a stronger voice about it.  But, despite multiple RTs by myself and other millennials, no one was willing to step up to the podium.</p>
<p>Turns out, some <a title="Health Plan Written By Millennials" href="http://activism.ology.com/2009/09/02/its-your-turn-a-health-plan-written-by-millennials/" target="_blank">people who have more time than I do to rub brain cells together</a> have been thinking the same thing.  Justin Quincy of <a title="Minus30Ology" href="http://minus30.ology.com" target="_blank">Minus30Ology</a> wrote me an e-mail the next day:</p>
<p>We are crafting potential legislative wishes for millennial healthcare reform and this seems like a great base to start from. We have created a petition entitled “Minus30″ that takes aim at the “60plus” organization funded by conservative-leaning members, to show that millennials also have a big stake in this debate. We’d really appreciate your support!!!</p>

<p>How could I say no to that?  These are millennials who know there&#8217;s very little millennial representation in government and want to make themselves heard.  Nevermind the pingpong style politics dominating congress right now, these are changes that will affect old people for the next 20 years and will affect US for the next 70!  Wake up, kids!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mkmabus/2910025091/" target="_blank"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1343" style="border: 2px solid black; margin: 10px;" title="Healthcare - Yikes!" src="http://www.psychoticresumes.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/healthcare.jpg" alt="Healthcare - Yikes!" width="500" height="333" /></a>For a while now, Millennial Mondays have been about showcasing what other people have to say about our generation.  More often than not, the &#8220;experts&#8221; advice is skewed and fallacious.  Let&#8217;s take back the reigns and tell the world what we really think.  <strong>Millennials &#8211; it&#8217;s time to sound off.</strong></p>
<p><strong>This week, the question is, What would healthcare look like under a Millennial president?  That is &#8211; if you were in the white house, what health care program would you propose, how would it work, and why would it work?</strong></p>
<p>You might be asking, how is this relevant to my resume and job search?  Believe it or not, it may come up in an interview &#8211; and if not in the interview, then you will certainly be affected by it when you seek out a new job and have to pick a health plan.</p>
<p>My healthcare system would see the elimination of insurance companies for all but the most dire circumstances and also long-term or life-dependent medicine.  I would revise patent law to restrict pharmaceutical companies from grabbing patents on medicine by making a tiny change.  I would also increase funding and availability of volunteers to the FDA to screen drugs faster.</p>
<p>I would create a small-premium program meant to be paid into each month, with the purpose of paying for emergency medical care and the occasional doctors visit when you needed it.  For an additional monthly fee, this would also cover prescriptions and additional visits to the doctor.  Healthcare equipment manufacturers would be frequently audited to guarantee that they&#8217;re providing the best products at the best prices, and hospitals audited to ensure they were not charging a ridiculous markup ($8 asprin, anyone?).</p>
<p>Doctors would join co-ops wherein each doctor would have access to the other doctors&#8217; files and would do a weekly or monthly review on procedures.  It&#8217;s been shown that when a doctor&#8217;s work is reviewed by his peers, quality of care goes up and cost of care goes down.  I would also institute a health education program &#8211; no more would we see minor problems being treated at urgent care.  Medical interns and registered nurses would be available at every hospital to treat patients who needed care but could not pay for the services.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not the best system designed, and certainly would cost a bit of money to enforce, but the research I&#8217;ve done says that the hospital markup, doctor over-treatment, and insurance companies are where the majority of the hyper-expensiveness comes in.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m about the most rabid advocate for the millennial generation you will ever meet.  Usually this takes the form of me berating the &#8220;corporate bastards&#8221; on Twitter and writing angry blogs in response to ageist blog posts and magazine articles.  They, in turn, largely ignore these as they sit on gold thrones and count their rapidly shrinking piles of money.</p>
<p>What I&#8217;ve noticed is that for as rabidly and vehemently anti-young person these business &#8220;professionals&#8221; are, they quickly change their tone when you confront them in person with stats and figures.  In fact &#8211; most of this age-based tension is based on surface-level stereotypes ALONE.  It just doesn&#8217;t stand up to scrutiny.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s my solution: practice tolerance and declare peace.  When an older generation does something you think is cool &#8211; promote the hell out of it.  When they screw up, be patient and explain why they offended you.  It&#8217;s very easy (and really fun) to write a snarky comment or e-mail in anger, but it&#8217;s just going to deepen the chasm between the generations.  Your call.</p>

<p>In today&#8217;s economy, with all the d*ckhead managers out there who have *no idea* what a work-life balance is, it might be a wiser choice to say, &#8220;How does McDonalds sound, honey?&#8221;</p>
<p>But in my opinion, it&#8217;s the wrong one. They say you only live once &#8211; and if that&#8217;s true, then why do you want to spend your limited time on this earth impressing a d*ckhead when you could be impressing your girlfriend instead? (Hopefully they&#8217;re not synonymous in your world.)</p>
