A little in-joke: I’ve called Dan a hack in the past – and that’s actually how we started talking.  This is what we’re laughing about when Dan mentions online reputation management.  A lot of people believe Personal Branding to be “the next big thing”.  A lot of people think it’s a load of bunk.  Make up your own mind about that – but a lot of Dan’s concepts he discusses here are sound.  Build a website, establish credibility, build a community, and participate in the community you make.

Things for Millennials to Do Before You Graduate
- Look up median/average salary of your chosen profession (Google)
- Nab up your own Gmail address (Firstname.LastName@gmail.com)
- Have your resume reviewed by a career counselor
- Go out and buy some interview clothes
- Compile an online portfolio amazing things you did.

Tiffany in Colorado asked: How do I “Dress Casual” for an interview?
- Make sure to shower.
- Button up shirt is still a good idea, even if it is just an overshirt.
- Layers are good, originality is good.
- Pants: no shorts, tank tops or spaghetti strings.
- Piercings okay, tattoos, depends on the tattoo.
- No mention of the Prince – (unless you’re interviewing to become a porn star).

• Dress Code for Millennials at Career Fairs
  • A monkey in a suit still looks like a better monkey than one who looks like a hippie or worse – one who isn’t wearing anything at all.  Don’t try that either…
• Come up with an original idea for yourself themed in your career
• Focus on 5 companies whose attention you want the most
  • Find a company listing and choose wisely
  • Use your “original idea” on those 5 companies
  • Bring at least 30 copies of your resume for everyone else
• Dress up your resume
  • Look it over with a friend for spelling mistakes
  • If you have access to free or low-cost resume review, take advantage of it
• Practice, Practice, Practice
  • “whatareyougonnadowiththat” ninjas are everywhere.  Be prepared.  Be a pirate.
• Finally: The List!
  • 3 things you’re very good at
  • 3 cool things you’ve done in school or at work
  • 3 questions about the company – it shows you’re not just passing out your resume.
  • A great question – “Tell me about a need at your company you think I could fill.”

• Like dating, you don’t want to seem too needy.
• Try to set a schedule for the next step before you leave the interview.
• E-mail your interviewer the same day and thank them, or call them if you don’ t have their e-mail.
• Call back one week after your interview.  Traditionally, more rejection happens after 11 AM than before.
• If you still haven’t heard back, call back again one week after your first try.  If you don’t hear back after that, it wasn’t meant to be.
